This item is for one Stretcher A1 Stretcher Bar featured on our Classic™ line of Stretched Canvas products. It is the industry standard for light weight and medium duty canvases.

Classic™ 3/4" Deep Bar • 1/16" Canvas Clearance

This Stretcher Bar is the standard in the industry for Stretched Canvases and works with standard picture frames. It provides 1/16" Canvas Clearance on both sides, you can stretch either side of the Bar.

  • Produces a 3/4" deep stretched canvas (Actual depth is 11/16")
  • 1-5/8" wide Stretcher Bar
  • Precision machined corners
  • Solid Ponderosa Pine or Fir from the Pacific Northwest
  • The ends are mirror images of each other, so they naturally fit together; no other parts are needed
  • Corner Keys may be purchased separately to expand the frame, only if needed to increase the tension after the canvas has been stretched

No Finger Joints!

Solid Wood is far superior to finger jointed wood, which is many small pieces glued together, each with varying grain densities that absorb and shed moisture at varying rates, expanding and contracting non-uniformly as environmental conditions change, and causing the wood to bow and the finger joints to eventually fail.

A single homogeneous kiln-dried solid wood Stretcher Bar outperforms and outlasts a finger jointed Bar whose sole purpose is to save the manufacturer cost, not contribute to the archival value of artwork intended to last a millennium. As a manufacturer, Masterpiece® does its part to conserve as much wood as possible, and still provide a quality product that will out-perform any other in the marketplace.

Forests need People, and People Need Forests

Using lumber from sustainably managed forests is a way to support the health and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. By choosing products made with sustainably sourced lumber, we can help to protect the environment, support local communities, and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Canvas Size Needed for this Stretcher Bar

Most artists will stretch the canvas and attach the staples or tacks onto the back side of the frame. Doing so allows you to paint on the edge and hang your art without needed a picture frame. Generally speaking, you should allow 4 Inches of canvas beyond the size of your frame.

For example, if you were to stretch a 18x52 frame size, which happens to be a custom proportion, your canvas should be about 22 x 56. This allows you ample room to stretch and attach the canvas on the back. Should you ever need to remove the canvas from the frame and re-attach it, it still serves that purpose too. Should you want to attach the canvas from the edge of the stretcher frame, then you can reduce the size of your canvas about 3/4" all the way around the frame.

I want to be famous, but unknown. ♦ Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas, a renowned French artist of the 19th century, made significant contributions to the world of art, especially in the realm of Impressionism. His unique approach to his work often showcased his penchant for capturing fleeting moments, particularly in the bustling Parisian life, revealing a side of humanity often overlooked. The tension between public recognition and personal anonymity, as expressed in this quote, touches on a sentiment that many artists can deeply relate to.

The desire for one's work to be recognized and appreciated, to leave an indelible mark on the art world, is a dream shared by many. Yet, in that same breath, there is the yearning for personal privacy, a space where one can continue to create, innovate, and experiment without the prying eyes of the world. For artists, we often walk this tightrope, seeking to maintain the sanctity of our personal lives while hoping our art achieves the recognition it deserves. It's this balance that challenges and pushes us to evaluate what success truly means in our path.

Degas's legacy is one characterized by his groundbreaking techniques and his ability to portray ordinary scenes with extraordinary depth. His yearning to remain an enigma, despite his unmistakable talent, serves as a reminder to us. As artists, our primary duty is to our craft and the stories we wish to tell. Fame and recognition, while validating, should never overshadow the essence of why we create in the first place.

The spirit of artistry is inspiration and creation. We too are inspired by the wisdom of this quote and hope you are inspired by our interpretation thereof, as well as this inimitable portrait we created of Edgar Degas. Go create!
