Expand your artistic horizons with the Masterpiece® Lost Size collection, featuring unique sizes like this 14x21 in the ubiquitous 3:2 Film aspect ratio. We are dedicated to helping artists find new ways to express themselves on canvas.
True 3:2 Film Proportion - 14x21 Size
The 3:2 aspect ratio is a very familiar format film, computer screens, and video, and, of course, is an aesthetically appealing proportion for your artistic compositions. Most 35 mm film cameras are based on this exact proportion, so our brains are trained to see images in this same ratio. It is commonly used for landscape photography and artwork, as it allows for a wide, panoramic view of the scene. It can be used to create a sense of balance and harmony in the composition, providing depth and perspective, as the longer sides of the canvas allow for more space to depict the background or foreground elements of the scene.
Even though this proportion is widely used, there are only a handful of commonly available standard canvas sizes in this ratio. There are a whole collection of intriguing (what we call) Lost Sizes, which are uncommon sizes in this common proportion. Unusual canvas sizes add intrigue to your artwork and an additional story to tell about your painting.

3D™ Pro 2.5 Stretcher Bar • 1/2" Canvas Clearance
1/2" Canvas Clearance is the space between the Bar and the canvas. Generally speaking, more clearance reduces the risk of the canvas touching the wood and creating unsightly lines during painting. Our design provides the optimal clearance so as not to impact your painting, but still leaving enough wood to the maximize strength of the Stretcher Bar.
- Produces a 2.5" deep stretched canvas (Actual depth is slightly thinner)
- 1.25" wide Stretcher Bar
- All Bars have an exclusive groove on the inside perimeter of the frame to which cross braces and Diamond Corner Braces attach
- Solid Ponderosa Pine or Fir from the Pacific Northwest
No Finger Joints!
Solid Wood is far superior to finger jointed wood, which is many small pieces glued together, each with varying grain densities that absorb and shed moisture at varying rates, expanding and contracting non-uniformly as environmental conditions change, and causing the wood to bow and the finger joints to eventually fail.
A single homogeneous kiln-dried solid wood Stretcher Bar outperforms and outlasts a finger jointed Bar whose sole purpose is to save the manufacturer cost, not contribute to the archival value of artwork intended to last a millennium. As a manufacturer, Masterpiece® does its part to conserve as much wood as possible, and still provide a quality product that will out-perform any other in the marketplace.
14x21 2.5" Deep Edge Heavy Frame Offers Maximum Support!
- Drawing depicts the exact frame construction, not the proportion
- 2.5" Deep Edge K2 Heavy Stretcher Bars are precision machined with a unique double tongue-and-groove corner joint that provides rock-solid torsional rigidity that resists warping or twisting, which is an important benefit for such a deep edge canvas
- No Brace Required for this size
- To increase canvas tension, remove any staples in the corners and tap all of the expansion keys further into their respective slots, then tension and re-staple the canvas in the corners
Selective Harvesting in our Sustainable Forests
Intelligent selective harvesting of timber is an ecological method to replace the natural occurrences of forest fires and disease and landslides that can devastate forests. This is all part of the process of sustainable forest management to which we subscribe when we choose which lumber we use in our products.
MuseumWrap™ Stretching Technique
With more than a half a century of American engineering, Masterpiece® designs and builds its own proprietary stretching equipment that enables us to produce the finest and most tightly-stretched canvas on the market.
- Drum-tight stretch!
- Up to 50% tighter than other methods
- Balanced tension across the surface
- Uncut folded corners make it possible to remove and re-stretch canvas on the same size frame
- Usually the corner folds are on the long sides

I am one of the few who has washed one's hands in the ether in which the palette of the artist dips.
♦ James Whistler
Renowned for his wit and flamboyant personality, James Whistler was also a deeply introspective and innovative artist. This quote hints at his profound immersion in the very essence of artistry, suggesting a spiritual and transcendent connection to his craft. Whistler's work often defied convention, straddling the boundary between the tangible and intangible, reality and ethereal dreamscape.
For many artists, the act of creation is more than just applying paint to a canvas. It's a dive into an otherworldly space, an ethereal realm where emotions, thoughts, and instincts merge. Whistler's sentiment underscores this notion. He isn't just touching the surface; he's delving into the very soul of artistic expression. As artists, we too have moments when we feel we're reaching beyond the mundane, tapping into something universal, vast, and ineffable. Those moments, when we are so deeply engrossed in our craft that the rest of the world fades away, are the ones that define our path and shape our most authentic creations.
Whistler's declaration serves as a beacon for all of us in the artistic realm, reminding us of the profound depths that our crafts can reach. While not everyone might wash their hands in the ether, the quest for that elusive, pure connection to our art drives us, pushing us to break boundaries and redefine our creative boundaries with every brushstroke.
Every artist thrives on inspiration. So we've offer this insightful quote with a uniquely crafted portrait of James Whistler. May this story invigorate your creativity! Start painting!
