Our proprietary stretching process uses pneumatically controlled machines that we built to yield drum-tight tension. Expand your artistic horizons with the Masterpiece® Lost Size collection, featuring unique sizes like this 14x21 in the ubiquitous 3:2 Film aspect ratio. We are dedicated to helping artists find new ways to express themselves on canvas.

True 3:2 Film Proportion - 14x21 Size

The 3:2 aspect ratio is a very familiar format film, computer screens, and video, and, of course, is an aesthetically appealing proportion for your artistic compositions. Most 35 mm film cameras are based on this exact proportion, so our brains are trained to see images in this same ratio. It is commonly used for landscape photography and artwork, as it allows for a wide, panoramic view of the scene. It can be used to create a sense of balance and harmony in the composition, providing depth and perspective, as the longer sides of the canvas allow for more space to depict the background or foreground elements of the scene.

Even though this proportion is widely used, there are only a handful of commonly available standard canvas sizes in this ratio. There are a whole collection of intriguing (what we call) Lost Sizes, which are uncommon sizes in this common proportion. Unusual canvas sizes add intrigue to your artwork and an additional story to tell about your painting.

3D™ Pro 2.5 Stretcher Bar • 1/2" Canvas Clearance

1/2" Canvas Clearance is the space between the Bar and the canvas. Generally speaking, more clearance reduces the risk of the canvas touching the wood and creating unsightly lines during painting. Our design provides the optimal clearance so as not to impact your painting, but still leaving enough wood to the maximize strength of the Stretcher Bar.

  • Produces a 2.5" deep stretched canvas (Actual depth is slightly thinner)
  • 1.25" wide Stretcher Bar
  • All Bars have an exclusive groove on the inside perimeter of the frame to which cross braces and Diamond Corner Braces attach
  • Solid Ponderosa Pine or Fir from the Pacific Northwest

Solid Wood is Archival - Finger Jointed Wood is Not

We only use Solid Wood to build our Stretcher Bars because a solid piece of wood will last indefinitely. When we speak of archival value, it's not just the paint you use and the quality of your canvas and ground, even the wood choices manufacturers make are part of the archival process.

The principal reason manufactures use finger jointed wood is reduce cost, not increase archival value. Wood constantly grows and shrinks when the environment becomes hotter, or colder, or more humid, or more dry. Because finger jointed wood is made-up of multiple and varied pieces of wood, with varying grain patterns and densities, they each absorb and shed moisture at varying rates, which works on the glue joints that hold them together, causing the wood to bow and the joints to eventually fail, and certainly not consistent with increasing the archival value of your artwork frame support.

As a manufacturer, we do our part to conserve as much wood as possible, and still provide a quality made product that will out-perform any other in the marketplace.

14x21 2.5" Deep Edge Heavy Frame Offers Maximum Support!

  • Drawing depicts the exact frame construction, not the proportion
  • 2.5" Deep Edge K2 Heavy Stretcher Bars are precision machined with a unique double tongue-and-groove corner joint that provides rock-solid torsional rigidity that resists warping or twisting, which is an important benefit for such a deep edge canvas
  • No Brace Required for this size
  • To increase canvas tension, remove any staples in the corners and tap all of the expansion keys further into their respective slots, then tension and re-staple the canvas in the corners

Our Ecosystem Depends on Healthy Forests

Forests play a vital role in our planet's ecosystem. They absorb carbon dioxide, filter air and water, and provide habitat for countless species of plants and animals. By using sustainably sourced lumber, we can help to protect these important ecosystems and ensure that they continue to provide these valuable services for generations to come.

MuseumWrap™ Stretching Technique

With more than a half a century of American engineering, Masterpiece® designs and builds its own proprietary stretching equipment that enables us to produce the finest and most tightly-stretched canvas on the market.

  • Drum-tight stretch!
  • Up to 50% tighter than other methods
  • Balanced tension across the surface
  • Uncut folded corners make it possible to remove and re-stretch canvas on the same size frame
  • Usually the corner folds are on the long sides

The canvas you choose is the foundation for your painting, but also serves as symbol of the quality that you as an artist stand for, and reflect on your own brand. Masterpiece® serves as your silent partner to create your next masterpiece. You "wow" them from the front, while we "wow" them from behind.

I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free. ♦ Michelangelo

Michelangelo, one of the most acclaimed artists and sculptors of the Renaissance, possessed an unparalleled ability to breathe life into stone. His creations, whether in frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel or in magnificent statues like David, were more than mere artworks; they were manifestations of an intense internal vision. This statement, profound in its simplicity, encapsulates Michelangelo's approach to his work: an unyielding pursuit to unveil the beauty that lay dormant within raw materials.

For artists, this sentiment underscores the importance of vision and perseverance. Within each canvas, piece of clay, or raw block of marble, lies a masterpiece waiting to be revealed. Our role, much like Michelangelo's, is to diligently work, nurturing our skills and harnessing our passion until the vision is realized. Michelangelo's teaches us that with patience, every stroke, cut, and revision brings us one step closer to unveiling the beauty that already exists, just waiting for the right hands to set it free.

The spirit of artistry is inspiration and creation. We too are inspired by the wisdom of this quote and hope you are inspired by our interpretation thereof, as well as this inimitable portrait we created of Michelangelo. Go create!
