Masterpiece® proudly features an exquisite selection of Artfix linen canvas, a testament to the heritage and expertise of another family-owned business flourishing for over 50 years in Provence, France. Artfix is renowned for its diverse range of artist canvas, encompassing primed linens, cottons, and polyesters. The collection is particularly distinguished by its Belgian linen weaves, varying from fine-tooth, quad-primed linens to the characteristic Belgian "handkerchief" linen textures. This range extends to robust, heavy-toothed linens, perfect for large-scale artistic creations.
Each canvas undergoes meticulous preparation, starting with up to two layers of a specially formulated collagen and acrylic copolymer sizing. This crucial step ensures complete isolation of the fabric from the acidic nature of primers and paints. Subsequently, the canvases are primed with one to six layers of either oil-based or acrylic universal primer.
Artfix's acrylic universal primer represents a harmonious blend of modern and traditional priming techniques, offering many of the absorbent characteristics of oil-based primers, but with a ground that remains flexible over time and accepts a wide variety of paint types.

Artfix L22U Universal Acrylic Primed Linen
Delightful hand-primed medium tooth linen with a medium tooth and texture. The "U" in the style name is for universal acrylic primed, which means that it works for virtually all paint types. The unique formulation mimics many attributes of oil-based primers, yet retains the resilience and flexibility characteristic of acrylic priming. Distinct from the typical glossy acrylic primers, this canvas surface has a more matte finish, enhancing its absorbency. This quality ensures superior adhesion for a diverse array of artistic media.
This universal acrylic primed linen is particularly well-suited for oil and acrylic paints, and its absorbent nature makes it an excellent choice for drawing media like oil sticks, pastels, charcoal, and graphite. When mounted on a rigid surface, the universal primed canvas and its smoothish texture even accommodates fragile mediums like egg tempera and caseins with exceptional results.

Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Primer Pigment
This primer contains premium-grade Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) white pigment, renowned for its exceptional performance in acrylic priming. Its standout feature is its enduring whiteness, coupled with remarkable flexibility that persists over time. In contrast to other pigments such as zinc dioxide, Titanium Dioxide maintains its resilience, preventing brittleness as it ages. This quality ensures that artworks retain their integrity and will stand the test of time.

The draftsmen must govern his lines, not be governed by them.
♦ Edgar Degas
Known primarily for his captivating depictions of ballerinas, Edgar Degas racecourse scenes, and intimate portraits, consistently displayed a distinctive blend of classical precision and experimental boldness in his work. It's this very balance that Degas hints at in his assertion about the artist's relationship with the lines they draw. Rather than being strictly bound by technique or established norms, Degas believed in the artist's command over the medium.
The lines on a canvas or sketchbook are more than just traces of graphite or strokes of paint; they are the physical manifestations of an artist's vision, decisions, and emotions. When Degas speaks of governing lines, he urges artists to wield their tools with intent and consciousness, ensuring each mark serves a purpose in the greater composition. It's a call to assert one's agency and not to become a passive participant in the creative process.
However, there's a deeper resonance to this sentiment, especially for us in the world of art. It's a reminder that while techniques, principles, and external expectations can guide our path, they shouldn't dictate it. As artists, we have the privilege and responsibility to shape our work and, by extension, how we engage with the world. Degas's wisdom serves as an enduring testament to the importance of intentionality, encouraging us to lead with purpose in our art and in our lives.
