True 5:4 Photography Proportion - 4x5 Size

The 5:4 aspect ratio is common to both art and portrait photography, as it creates a visually pleasing format for the human figure and face. The balanced compositional format can help to create a sense of symmetry and harmony in your artwork. The 5:4 ratio has a familiar "feel", as it was commonly used in early computer monitors. Additionally, you might consider trying some relatively unknown sizes in this same proportion that we call Lost Sizes As an artist, you get the best of both worlds, because you still get to use the same aesthetically appealing 5:4 format and use rare or novel sizes that help make your art stand-out.

Raw Mandalay™ Belgian Linen 11.6 oz Unprimed

Very heavy weight linen and very tightly woven. Take control of your art by preparing your own ground on Belgian Linen canvas. Use bare expanses of canvas as part of the painting or simply create the ground exactly ask you like.

  • 100% Belgian Linen 11.6 oz. per square yard
  • Very Heavy Weight, Tight Weave, Coarse Texture
  • Raw fabric blocks 95% of the light, which indicates how tight is the weave
  • Warp and Weft: 31x33 yarns per square inch
  • Linen has natural oils that prevent disintegration over time.

Monet™ Pro 1.5" Deep Bar • 1/2" Canvas Clearance

1/2" Canvas Clearance is the space between the Bar and the canvas. Generally speaking, more clearance reduces the risk of the canvas touching the wood and creating unsightly lines during painting. Our design provides the optimal clearance so as not to impact your painting, but still leaving enough wood to the maximize strength of the Stretcher Bar.

  • Produces a 1.5" deep stretched canvas (Actual depth is slightly thinner)
  • 1-5/8" wide Stretcher Bar
  • Solid Ponderosa Pine or Fir from the Pacific Northwest

No Finger Joints!

Solid Wood is far superior to finger jointed wood, which is many small pieces glued together, each with varying grain densities that absorb and shed moisture at varying rates, expanding and contracting non-uniformly as environmental conditions change, and causing the wood to bow and the finger joints to eventually fail.

A single homogeneous kiln-dried solid wood Stretcher Bar outperforms and outlasts a finger jointed Bar whose sole purpose is to save the manufacturer cost, not contribute to the archival value of artwork intended to last a millennium. As a manufacturer, Masterpiece® does its part to conserve as much wood as possible, and still provide a quality product that will out-perform any other in the marketplace.

4x5 Monet Pro Strainer Frame

  • Drawing depicts the exact frame construction, not the proportion
  • Strainer Bars are used when the short side is under 10" inches
  • Fixed Corner Frame - Not keyable or expandable
  • No cross braces required when the frame length is under 20", but this frame provides very robust and solid support for this 4x5 size frame

Time is but the stream I go a-fishing in. ♦ Henry David Thoreau

Henry David Thoreau, the contemplative naturalist and philosopher, spent a good portion of his life along the shores of Walden Pond. For him, nature was more than just a backdrop; it was a canvas upon which life's most profound questions were painted. When he likened time to a stream, it wasn't merely a fleeting poetic thought. It was an observation of life's ephemerality. Just as water in a stream never stays still, moments pass and are replaced by new ones, continuously flowing.

For artists, we too often find ourselves 'fishing' in the stream of time. Not for fish, but for inspiration, for that elusive idea, for the perfect expression of our innermost thoughts and feelings. It's an endeavor that requires patience and persistence. Yet, just as Thoreau found solace and understanding by the water, we find clarity and purpose in our art. As time moves, so do we, adapting and evolving our techniques, styles, and visions. And even if we sometimes return with an empty 'fishing basket', there's knowledge in the process, an understanding that eludes many.

Thoreau's reflection reminds us that time, while ceaseless and unyielding, also offers endless opportunities. Each moment is a chance to cast our line into the waters of creativity, to dive deep into the current of our imagination. So, fellow artists, let's not lament the swift passage of time. Instead, let's embrace it, learn from it, and remember that every second is a new opportunity to create something timeless.

We curated this empowering quote with some context and hope you find it insightful, plus we created this unique portrait of Henry David Thoreau to make it a bit more intriguing. Now get to work on your own!
