Monet™ Pro means a 1-1/2" deep canvas that is stretched using our MuseumWrap™ back-stapled method with folded corners. Our proprietary stretching process uses pneumatically controlled machines that we built to yield drum-tight tension. See below to learn more about the finest professional quality artist canvas on the market.
Take your artwork to the next level with our exclusive Lost Size collection, starting with this 8x12 canvas. Conceived by Masterpiece® to the quite familiar 3:2 Film proportion, these sizes are perfect for artists seeking something different.
True 3:2 Film Proportion - 8x12 Size
The 3:2 aspect ratio is a very familiar format film, computer screens, and video, and, of course, is an aesthetically appealing proportion for your artistic compositions. Most 35 mm film cameras are based on this exact proportion, so our brains are trained to see images in this same ratio. It is commonly used for landscape photography and artwork, as it allows for a wide, panoramic view of the scene. It can be used to create a sense of balance and harmony in the composition, providing depth and perspective, as the longer sides of the canvas allow for more space to depict the background or foreground elements of the scene.
Even though this proportion is widely used, there are only a handful of commonly available standard canvas sizes in this ratio. There are a whole collection of intriguing (what we call) Lost Sizes, which are uncommon sizes in this common proportion. Unusual canvas sizes add intrigue to your artwork and an additional story to tell about your painting.

Vegan Ground:
There are no animal products that make-up the sizing and the primer for this fine canvas. Historically, traditional canvas grounds have included egg tempura, pigments with cow urine, and of course, rabbit skin glue. In today's rapidly advancing world, there are many more choices available for artists who prefer non-animal based products that perform far better than their animal-based predecessors.
Ventura™ Alkyd Oil Primed Belgian Linen
This strong and fine weave linen has more of an even tooth and absorbent quality to the ground. It has a light gray tone.- 100% Belgian Linen 7 oz; Primed Weight 11.3 oz per square yard
- Medium Heavy Weight, Fine Weave, Fine Texture
- Double Sized and Double Primed with acid-free archival quality alkyd ground
- Impenetrable ground prevents oil paint from leaching through and harming the canvas
- For oils, alkyds, and water miscible oil paints
- Linen has natural oils that prevent disintegration over time
Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Primer Pigment
Our primer is made with the highest-quality Titanium Dioxide white pigment, which is an excellent pigment for acrylic primed grounds, providing superior whiteness and maintaining excellent flexibility over time. Unlike some other common pigments, such as zinc dioxide, TiO2 doesn't become brittle as it ages, helping to ensure that your painting will stand the test of time.
Oil paint on an oil primed canvas improves your results
Using an oil prepared canvas for oil painting can produce superior results because the paint and ground are organically similar and create an ideal "chemical bond" where the paint sinks into the ground resulting in a smoother and more even finish. The resulting bond between the paint and canvas is stronger, making the artwork more durable and long-lasting. Additionally, the melding of the two oil-based materials creates an effect called luminosity, where the colors appear to glow from within, and thereby enhances the vibrancy and brightness of the colors, impacting the way light reflects off the colors.
Flash an Oil Prepared Canvas with Mineral Spirits
While it is not required, for best results, lightly wipe or flash the oil prepared canvas with mineral spirits before painting to make sure that your surface is completely clean of any dust or contaminants before painting.
8x12 Monet Pro Strainer Frame
- Drawing depicts the exact frame construction, not the proportion
- Strainer Bars are used when the short side is under 10" inches
- Fixed Corner Frame - Not keyable or expandable
- No cross braces required when the frame length is under 20", but this frame provides very robust and solid support for this 8x12 size frame
Monet™ Pro 1.5" Deep Bar • 1/2" Canvas Clearance
1/2" Canvas Clearance is the space between the Bar and the canvas. Generally speaking, more clearance reduces the risk of the canvas touching the wood and creating unsightly lines during painting. Our design provides the optimal clearance so as not to impact your painting, but still leaving enough wood to the maximize strength of the Stretcher Bar.
- Produces a 1.5" deep stretched canvas (Actual depth is slightly thinner)
- 1-5/8" wide Stretcher Bar
- Solid Ponderosa Pine or Fir from the Pacific Northwest
No Finger Joints!
Solid Wood is far superior to finger jointed wood, which is many small pieces glued together, each with varying grain densities that absorb and shed moisture at varying rates, expanding and contracting non-uniformly as environmental conditions change, and causing the wood to bow and the finger joints to eventually fail.
A single homogeneous kiln-dried solid wood Stretcher Bar outperforms and outlasts a finger jointed Bar whose sole purpose is to save the manufacturer cost, not contribute to the archival value of artwork intended to last a millennium. As a manufacturer, Masterpiece® does its part to conserve as much wood as possible, and still provide a quality product that will out-perform any other in the marketplace.
Sustainably Managed Forests Inhale and Exhale
The world's forests are essential to human survival. Forests inhale carbon dioxide for the earth, and exhale oxygen essential for life. When we speak of the sustainable forest strategy of ensuring that more timber will exist in the same forest land than exists today, this is the only viable plan for the future of humanity. For this reason, we use only lumber from the sustainable forests of Oregon, Washington, and California, where thereÕs more standing timber today than last century!
MuseumWrap™ Stretching Technique
With more than a half a century of American engineering, Masterpiece® designs and builds its own proprietary stretching equipment that enables us to produce the finest and most tightly-stretched canvas on the market.
- Drum-tight stretch!
- Up to 50% tighter than other methods
- Balanced tension across the surface
- Uncut folded corners make it possible to remove and re-stretch canvas on the same size frame
- Usually the corner folds are on the long sides
Since 1965, our passion for perfection has driven us at Masterpiece® to construct professional quality canvases that artists around the nation desire. All too often, other brands are more focused on saving cost and delivering less than adequate quality. However, we find that our customers not only desire fine quality, but they also tell us that their art is better for having painted on the exquisite canvases that we produce.
I use the same colors as before, but I see them differently.
♦ Claude Monet
Imagine strolling through Giverny, where Claude Monet painted his iconic water lilies, absorbing the symphony of colors playing out in front of you. Monet, a beacon of the Impressionist movement, had an innate ability to perceive shifts in light, shadow, and color. His life was defined by capturing the fleeting moments of nature, forever changing, always elusive.
Monet's observation about seeing colors differently encapsulates the essence of personal growth and evolution in the world of art. It's not just about the physical colors we use but the experiences, emotions, and insights that influence how we apply them. As we navigate the peaks and valleys of our art careers, our perception of the world around us and how we represent it undergoes a metamorphosis. This change isn't just confined to our canvases but permeates our lives, reshaping how we see and interact with the world. It reminds us that while our tools may remain the same, our vision is in a state of constant evolution, making every piece of art a unique testament to that moment in our lives.
To enhance your creative exploration of our site, we offer the insightful wisdom of Claude Monet, our interpretation, and little one-of-a-kind portrait that we created. Now go paint!
Tight'n'Up™ Liquid Canvas Retensioner
While all of our Masterpiece® Pro canvases are stretched very tightly and our frames have a built-in method to increase tension, we have another method to add canvas tension. Tight'n'Up™ Liquid Canvas Retensioner (sold separately) can be sprayed on the back of a canvas to repair most canvas tension issues.
With Tight'n'Up™, you can add tension to just a small area, or a large area. Simply spray it lightly on the back and brush it into the canvas, and within seconds, your canvas becomes tighter and stays tighter. The more you use, the tighter it gets.
