Plywood Protection for your Stretched Canvas.
We put a sheet of plywood on the top and the bottom of your custom made box. It helps protect against forklift puncture, boxes on top smashing into yours, and general abusive handling by parcel carriers. Although it adds weight, interestingly enough, it doesn't really much extra expense in shipping cost, because stretched canvases are rated by volume, more than they are by weight.
We recommend Plywood in the following circumstances:
- For frame sizes 24x30 and larger
- When your timing is critical for a commission
- For high value products like linen
- When damage would set you back on your schedule
To calculate the cost, simply multiply your width and length of the frame size and use that for the quantity. For example, if you are ordering a 40x60, then you would put 2400 (40 x 60 = 2400) for the quantity, and that will give you 2 sheets of plywood protection. If you are ordering multiple quantity of canvases, then you only need this once, and we can use the plywood to protect as many as we can fit in the box.
Our normal boxes are very sturdily built. We use double wall 275# test corrugated boxes, with 3 layers of protection in the corners (3 layers of double wall corrugated means 6 layers of normal corrugated). We take shipping quite seriously, and do everything possible to minimize the chance of damage. Most of the time, we don't have issues, but in the cases above, plywood helps a lot and adds only a nominal up-charge for peace of mind.
