Unlock new creative possibilities with the Masterpiece® Lost Size collection, featuring unique sizes like this 8x12 in the recognizable 3:2 Film aspect ratio. Whether you're a professional artist or just starting out, our unconventional sizes are designed to inspire.

True 3:2 Film Proportion - 8x12 Size

The 3:2 aspect ratio is a very familiar format film, computer screens, and video, and, of course, is an aesthetically appealing proportion for your artistic compositions. Most 35 mm film cameras are based on this exact proportion, so our brains are trained to see images in this same ratio. It is commonly used for landscape photography and artwork, as it allows for a wide, panoramic view of the scene. It can be used to create a sense of balance and harmony in the composition, providing depth and perspective, as the longer sides of the canvas allow for more space to depict the background or foreground elements of the scene.

Even though this proportion is widely used, there are only a handful of commonly available standard canvas sizes in this ratio. There are a whole collection of intriguing (what we call) Lost Sizes, which are uncommon sizes in this common proportion. Unusual canvas sizes add intrigue to your artwork and an additional story to tell about your painting.

3D™ Pro 2.5 Stretcher Bar • 1/2" Canvas Clearance

1/2" Canvas Clearance is the space between the Bar and the canvas. Generally speaking, more clearance reduces the risk of the canvas touching the wood and creating unsightly lines during painting. Our design provides the optimal clearance so as not to impact your painting, but still leaving enough wood to the maximize strength of the Stretcher Bar.

  • Produces a 2.5" deep stretched canvas (Actual depth is slightly thinner)
  • 1.25" wide Stretcher Bar
  • All Bars have an exclusive groove on the inside perimeter of the frame to which cross braces and Diamond Corner Braces attach
  • Solid Ponderosa Pine or Fir from the Pacific Northwest

Solid Wood is Archival - Finger Jointed Wood is Not

We only use Solid Wood to build our Stretcher Bars because a solid piece of wood will last indefinitely. When we speak of archival value, it's not just the paint you use and the quality of your canvas and ground, even the wood choices manufacturers make are part of the archival process.

The principal reason manufactures use finger jointed wood is reduce cost, not increase archival value. Wood constantly grows and shrinks when the environment becomes hotter, or colder, or more humid, or more dry. Because finger jointed wood is made-up of multiple and varied pieces of wood, with varying grain patterns and densities, they each absorb and shed moisture at varying rates, which works on the glue joints that hold them together, causing the wood to bow and the joints to eventually fail, and certainly not consistent with increasing the archival value of your artwork frame support.

As a manufacturer, we do our part to conserve as much wood as possible, and still provide a quality made product that will out-perform any other in the marketplace.

Tree Replanting - Essential to Sustainably Managed Forests

Harvesting timber provides humans with an essential natural resource, but replanting trees at a rate higher than a harvest is a key component in humanity's effort to guarantee a healthy forest for the future. Increasing our number of trees is just as essential to our economy, as the harvest itself, which is why we select only timber harvested from responsibly managed forests.

A painter should begin every canvas with a wash of black, because all things in nature are dark except where exposed by the light. ♦ Leonardo da Vinci

Whose life was characterized by an insatiable curiosity, Leonardo da Vinci had a unique ability to observe and depict the interplay of light and shadow in his masterpieces. From the enigmatic Mona Lisa to the detailed sketches of anatomy, his artistry revealed a profound understanding of how darkness and light coexist. To da Vinci, beginning with a wash of black wasn't merely a technique; it was a reflection of the natural world's essence. Just as a canvas starts with darkness, so too does our world, waiting for the artist's hand or nature's light to reveal its beauty.

This insight serves as a metaphorical foundation. In our art careers, we often start with uncertainty, unsure of the final outcome. But it is through our exploration, our application of skill and passion, that we gradually bring light to our work, uncovering the depths of our creativity and imagination. By embracing da Vinci's philosophy, we acknowledge the importance of beginnings and the transformative power of our own artistic vision.

Creativity is the heart of what we both do. So we've curated this empowering quote and some background. And, in our own act of creation, we provide this unique portrayal we made of Leonardo da Vinci.
