Our proprietary stretching process uses pneumatically controlled machines that we built to yield drum-tight tension. Only Masterpiece® offers a unique series of Lost Sizes that you won't find anywhere else. Take, for example, 8x12, a little-known size that's part of the classic 3:2 Film proportion. We love to inspire artists with unusual sizes to take their art to the next level to help make their art stand-out from the rest.

True 3:2 Film Proportion - 8x12 Size

The 3:2 aspect ratio is a very familiar format film, computer screens, and video, and, of course, is an aesthetically appealing proportion for your artistic compositions. Most 35 mm film cameras are based on this exact proportion, so our brains are trained to see images in this same ratio. It is commonly used for landscape photography and artwork, as it allows for a wide, panoramic view of the scene. It can be used to create a sense of balance and harmony in the composition, providing depth and perspective, as the longer sides of the canvas allow for more space to depict the background or foreground elements of the scene.

Even though this proportion is widely used, there are only a handful of commonly available standard canvas sizes in this ratio. There are a whole collection of intriguing (what we call) Lost Sizes, which are uncommon sizes in this common proportion. Unusual canvas sizes add intrigue to your artwork and an additional story to tell about your painting.

Sausalito™ 11.5oz Acrylic Primed Cotton

Our second best selling surface; heavy weight and body with a rugged and paint-gripping surface texture; great for heavy paint applications and impasto.

  • 100% Cotton 11.5 oz.; Primed Weight 14 oz. per square yard
  • Heavy Weight, Medium Weave, Robust Texture
  • Sized and Double Primed with acid-free archival quality acrylic gesso
  • Impenetrable ground prevents oil paint from leaching through and harming the canvas
  • For acrylics, oils, alkyds, and water miscible oil paints

Vegan Ground:

There are no animal products that make-up the sizing and the primer for this fine canvas. Historically, traditional canvas grounds have included egg tempura, pigments with cow urine, and of course, rabbit skin glue. In today's rapidly advancing world, there are many more choices available for artists who prefer non-animal based products that perform far better than their animal-based predecessors.

Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Primer Pigment

This primer contains premium-grade Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) white pigment, renowned for its exceptional performance in acrylic priming. Its standout feature is its enduring whiteness, coupled with remarkable flexibility that persists over time. In contrast to other pigments such as zinc dioxide, Titanium Dioxide maintains its resilience, preventing brittleness as it ages. This quality ensures that artworks retain their integrity and will stand the test of time.

Vincent™ Pro 7/8" Deep Bar • 5/16" Canvas Clearance

5/16" Canvas Clearance is the space between the Bar and the canvas. Generally speaking, more clearance reduces the risk of the canvas touching the wood and creating unsightly lines during painting. Our design provides the optimal clearance so as not to impact your painting, but still leaving enough wood to the maximize strength of the Stretcher Bar.

  • Produces a 7/8" deep stretched canvas
  • 1.5" wide Stretcher Bar
  • Solid Ponderosa Pine or Fir from the Pacific Northwest

Solid Wood is Archival - Finger Jointed Wood is Not

We only use Solid Wood to build our Stretcher Bars because a solid piece of wood will last indefinitely. When we speak of archival value, it's not just the paint you use and the quality of your canvas and ground, even the wood choices manufacturers make are part of the archival process.

The principal reason manufactures use finger jointed wood is reduce cost, not increase archival value. Wood constantly grows and shrinks when the environment becomes hotter, or colder, or more humid, or more dry. Because finger jointed wood is made-up of multiple and varied pieces of wood, with varying grain patterns and densities, they each absorb and shed moisture at varying rates, which works on the glue joints that hold them together, causing the wood to bow and the joints to eventually fail, and certainly not consistent with increasing the archival value of your artwork frame support.

As a manufacturer, we do our part to conserve as much wood as possible, and still provide a quality made product that will out-perform any other in the marketplace.

The whole world, as we experience it visually, comes to us through the mystic realm of color. ♦ Robert Henri

A prominent figure in the Ashcan School of American Realism, Robert Henri had an astute understanding of the powerful role color plays in our lives. He observed the world not just as a painter, but as a passionate advocate for the visceral and emotional impact of visual experiences. For Henri, color was not merely a tool or medium; it was the essence of perception, a bridge between reality and emotion.

We are often tasked with capturing the intangible, the feelings and emotions that words might fail to describe. Color becomes our language, our way of communicating the ineffable. When we mix shades on a palette or apply brush strokes to a canvas, we are essentially weaving a narrative that speaks to the heart. Just as music has its melodies and rhythms, the art we create dances with hues and tones, guiding viewers through stories that might otherwise remain untold. This deep connection between perception and expression, so beautifully articulated by Henri, serves as a reminder of the magic that exists when we embrace the world in all its chromatic splendor.

We are innately drawn to the act of creation. We've channeled this drive to curate this inspiring quote and contex along with our own portrait we created of Robert Henri..our tribute to the timeless dance of creativity. Go paint!
