Masterpiece® proudly features an exquisite selection of Artfix linen canvas, a testament to the heritage and expertise of another family-owned business flourishing for over 50 years in Provence, France. Artfix is renowned for its diverse range of artist canvas, encompassing primed linens, cottons, and polyesters. The collection is particularly distinguished by its Belgian linen weaves, varying from fine-tooth, quad-primed linens to the characteristic Belgian "handkerchief" linen textures. This range extends to robust, heavy-toothed linens, perfect for large-scale artistic creations.

Each canvas undergoes meticulous preparation, starting with up to two layers of a specially formulated collagen and acrylic copolymer sizing. This crucial step ensures complete isolation of the fabric from the acidic nature of primers and paints. Subsequently, the canvases are primed with one to six layers of either oil-based or acrylic universal primer.

Artfix's acrylic universal primer represents a harmonious blend of modern and traditional priming techniques, offering many of the absorbent characteristics of oil-based primers, but with a ground that remains flexible over time and accepts a wide variety of paint types.

Artfix LC3U Universal Acrylic Primed Linen

Medium-heavy fine weave medium weight Belgian linen. Hand-primed to have a consistent homogenous surface tooth. It has a bright white tone. The "U" in the style name is for universal acrylic primed, which means that it works for virtually all paint types. The unique formulation mimics many attributes of oil-based primers, yet retains the resilience and flexibility characteristic of acrylic priming. Distinct from the typical glossy acrylic primers, this canvas surface has a more matte finish, enhancing its absorbency. This quality ensures superior adhesion for a diverse array of artistic media.

This universal acrylic primed linen is particularly well-suited for oil and acrylic paints, and its absorbent nature makes it an excellent choice for drawing media like oil sticks, pastels, charcoal, and graphite. When mounted on a rigid surface, the universal primed canvas and its smoother texture even accommodates fragile mediums like egg tempera and caseins with exceptional results.

  • 100% Belgian Linen 6.1 oz.; Primed Weight 13.9 oz. per square yard
  • Medium Weight, Closed Weave, Medium Texture
  • Double Sized and Double Primed with acid-free archival quality acrylic gesso
  • Impenetrable ground prevents oil paint from leaching through and harming the canvas
  • For acrylics, oils, alkyds, and water miscible oil paints
  • Linen has natural oils that prevent disintegration over time.

Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) Primer Pigment

This primer contains premium-grade Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) white pigment, renowned for its exceptional performance in acrylic priming. Its standout feature is its enduring whiteness, coupled with remarkable flexibility that persists over time. In contrast to other pigments such as zinc dioxide, Titanium Dioxide maintains its resilience, preventing brittleness as it ages. This quality ensures that artworks retain their integrity and will stand the test of time.

It seems to me that today, if the artist wishes to be serious — to cut out a little original niche for himself, or at least preserve his own innocence of personality — he must once more sink himself in solitude. ♦ Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas, an avant-garde figure of the 19th century, is perhaps best known for his candid depictions of ballet dancers. Yet, beyond the vibrant strokes and mesmerizing compositions, Degas was a man characterized by his deep introspection and penchant for solitude. In an era of the burgeoning café culture of Paris, where artists and intellectuals congregated and exchanged ideas, Degas often chose the company of his own thoughts.

Artists today find themselves in a world bombarded by stimuli, where the cacophony of digital media and the constant chatter of social networks can be overwhelming. In advocating for solitude, Degas underlines the importance of introspection and self-awareness. By immersing ourselves in the quiet corners of our minds, we as artists can better understand our unique voices, uninfluenced by the din of the outside world. It is in these moments of seclusion that our truest inspirations often emerge, leading us to craft pieces that genuinely represent who we are and what we wish to convey.

We've handpicked this quote and our interpretation of it's meaning to inspire your art. And we honor the legacy of Edgar Degas by creating this one-of-a-kind portrait to tie it all together. Start Painting!
